Los Cabos is Home to Four of the World’s 100 Best Golf Courses, According to Golf Digest

Golf Digest’s third biennial ranking of the World’s 100 Best Golf Courses (U.S. excluded) has been released, and the 2018-2019 listing has been very kind to Los Cabos, with four of the Baja California Sur municipality’s 16 operating courses – a staggering 25% – making the elite cut. Newcomer Quivira joins the Diamante Dunes Course, the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, and Querencia in the rankings.

Here’s how the four stack up…

Los Cabos is Home to Four of the World's 100 Best Golf Courses

Davis Love III’s Dunes Course at Diamante remains the highest rated in Los Cabos, and one of the 100 Best in the World according to Golf Digest.

  1. Dunes Course at Diamante

In Los Cabos, only Nicklaus landmark Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol has achieved the same sort of acclaim as Davis Love III’s links style Dunes Course at Diamante; and even that falls short when it comes to the opinion of the sport’s premier tastemakers. Voted top new international course in 2010, GOLF Magazine declared the Dunes Course the 52nd best course in the world in 2013, the highest ranking ever achieved by a Los Cabos golf course. It has since ascended, and now sits at 36 on their list. Golf Digest is a bit stingier with their acclaim, but moves it up five spots to 47, noting that “no other links in the world sports cactus.”

  1. Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol

Jack Nicklaus remains the unquestioned godfather of golf in Los Cabos, with six magnificent courses to date on his Land’s End résumé. Developer Don Koll brought the Golden Bear to Los Cabos in the early 1990s, a move that first paid dividends in 1992, when Nicklaus crafted 9-hole Mountain and Arroyo courses opened at Palmilla. Nicklaus’ first local masterpiece, however, came two years later, when the Ocean Course debuted at Cabo del Sol. This stunning loop, which Nicklaus himself called “the best golf property I’ve ever seen”, has been rated by various publications among the 100 best in the world for 15…make that 16 consecutive years and counting.

Jack Nicklaus’ spectacular Quivira makes its debut on the Golf Digest 100 Best, ranked at 93.

  1. Quivira Golf Club

Nicklaus struck gold again in 2014 with a breathtaking cliffside layout at Quivira, a resort and residential development from Pueblo Bonito founder Ernesto Coppel Kelly. The 7,139-yard tour de force was voted the world’s best new international course in 2015 by GOLF Magazine, and its ascension to the very top ranks of international courses comes as no surprise to anyone lucky enough to have played it. The cliffside 5th, accessible after a long, winding, uphill cart ride, is absolutely spectacular, with a blind shot down to a green perched above crashing Pacific Ocean waves. Superb comfort food stations and an on-site steakhouse only add to the unforgettable experience.

  1. Querencia

Tom Fazio’s superb Querencia debuted in 2000, and for more than 15 years, diabolical yet picturesque challenges like the dogleg, dual-bunkered, par-5 fourth were known only to millionaire members. That changed in 2016, when Golf Digest finally let the cat out of the bag, naming it one of the world’s 100 best in their annual rankings. It moves up one spot on the 2018 list, although Golf Digest was not wholly effusive in its praise: “The one discordant note are royal palms planted in many desert spots near greens. They seem too artificial among native desert plants.”

Besides the four Los Cabos courses, only one other Mexican layout made Golf Digest’s 100 Best: the Jack Nicklaus designed Four Seasons Punta Mita, which like Quivira was a first-time honoree.

In a separate announcement, Golf Digest unveiled its rankings of the best courses by country. Los Cabos again was a standout, accounting for 10 of the top 15 in Mexico (see below).
